Front Range Counseling Center offers various group counseling sessions throughout the year including groups targeted toward anxiety and stress management, relationship or marital issues, men’s issues, support groups for depression counseling and a general group for addressing a broad range of members’ needs. We offer group therapy at our Denver and Littleton, Colorado offices with different times and topics offered at each location. What is Group Counseling?

Our group counseling meetings consist of five to eight members who gather weekly for an hour and a half to talk freely about their feelings in a safe environment. The members generate topics for discussion based on what concerns are being shared. One of our trained leaders will guide the group through the discussion. In general, group therapy sessions can focus on specific themes while others are more generalized. Some sessions have time constraints while others are open-ended. Most importantly, the discussions held during group sessions and the identities of the members are kept strictly confidential.

How Can Group Counseling Help?

There are often things about ourselves that we don’t realize may be contributing to our emotional distress. Group counseling allows members to uncover the truths about themselves in their interactions with others. The opportunity to interact honestly and openly with the group led by a trained therapist, as opposed to friends and family members, can be an enlightening experience that allows you to see yourself in a new way. Group counseling also allows members to experiment with newly adopted attitudes and ways of dealing with problems while receiving support and feedback from their peers in the group. These sessions are particularly beneficial for people feeling isolated from society or misunderstood by others. People are often surprised to find out just how much they have in common with other individuals.

How much do I have to talk about myself?

A common misconception about group therapy is that people believe they will be forced to reveal their deepest secrets. During a group session what you reveal is completely up to you. However, the group therapist will encourage you to share what brought you to group and your reactions to other group members, family, friends and life in general. It is important to remember though – the more you put into group the more you get out of it. Your group therapist is aware that most people fear interacting with strangers, so their job will be to create a supportive environment where you feel safe sharing. This enables you to feel comfortable confronting issues and resolving your problems in a way that is beneficial to you.

What are the ground rules when engaging in group therapy?

Everything about group is confidential. All members must agree to never discuss other members and the conversations that transpired during group. If you will be missing a meeting, please let the group leader know at least 24 hours in advance. If you choose to leave, whether it is because group isn’t right for you or you have gotten everything out of the group you hoped, we request that you come to the meeting to say goodbye and share your reasoning. This is not only beneficial for you, but the rest of the group as well.
